Sharon Community Band Pops Concert
Fascinatin' Rhythm: From Rags to Swing
Sunday, May 20, 2001, 7pm
Sharon Community Center

The Sharon Community Bands under the direction of Gordon Hallberg will present a Pops concert on Sunday, May 20, at 7pm at the Sharon Community Center.

Gordon Hallberg
Conductor

Appearing with the Roy Scott Big Band on several selections will be Ms. Ruth Debrot, a local vocal soloist known for her convincing song stylings, wonderful musicianship and great audience appeal. The theme of the concert is "Fascinatin' Rhythm -- From Rags to Swing."

The concert will highlight music with the rhythms of Ragtime and Swing -- rhythms that caused a sensation in music at the turn of the 20th century. The music of Scott Joplin and Duke Ellington will be featured by a "greatest hits" collection of their memorable tunes. In the second half of the program the Roy Scott Big Band will take the stage with a selection of Swing music enlarging on the "Fascinatin' Rhythm" theme. Selections will include music by Ellington and Gershwin.

Ruth Debrot will be making her return engagement as vocal soloist with the band. With the Roy Scott Big Band she will be performing a new "salsa" arrangement of the Ellington standard, "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing", as well as the beautiful Hoagy Carmichael - Johny Mercer ballad, "Skylark".

Band soloists Steve Brown (alto sax), Tom Lucci (tenor sax), and Alan Shapiro (trumpet) will be featured on selections including "When Sonny Gets Blue", "Cherokee" and Charlie Parker's "Ornithology."

Put on your dancing Shoes and don't miss the Sharon Community Band's Annual Pops Concert!
