Local Dance Studios Gear Up for
Joint Performance
with Sharon Community Band March 9th
Three local dance studios will perform a variety of dance styles
with the Sharon Community Band in a program entitled "Music
Moves the World: a Celebration of International Dance Music."
The production will be held Sunday, March 9 at the Sharon High School
auditorium.
Each studio's dancers will bring their own flair to four distinct
musical pieces. The Heidi Miller School of Dance from Walpole will
perform an elegant dance choreographed to "Ballet de Parisien."
Savaria Dance Studio will also participate in the show. Based in
Norwood, Savaria teaches a variety of dance styles, from Latin to
Ballroom, to both couples and individual dancers. Savaria Instructors
Kimberly Harris and Petr Dubovsky will present a Latin dance to
the piece "Beguine for Band." Both Harris and Dubovsky
have competed professionally in Latin dance for several years.
"RiverDance," the final piece, will feature Highland
Dance Boston, based in Arlington. Highland Dance Boston is a company
that specializes in the traditional and contemporary dances of Scotland.
The company includes competitive highland dancers, teachers of
Scottish dance, and musicians. Its repertoire includes many exciting
choreographies of traditional highland and step dances, as well
as some more recently devised pieces. It was founded in 2002 by
Robert McOwen, Lindsay Page, and Karen Mahoney. Highland will also
perform a special number with a bagpipe.
Among Highland's dancers will be Sydney MacPherson, Isla MacPherson,
Cora Mahoney, Carolyn Buractaon, Darlington Howland, Hailey Harris,
Rhia Henderson, and Karen Mahoney.
"Music Moves the World" will be the second concert in
the Sharon Community Band's 20th season. For Veterans' Day 2007,
the SCB presented "Music that Inspired a Nation" to a
large, enthusiastic crowd and favorable reviews.
Leading the Sharon Community Band is Steve Bell. Conducting the
band in his first season, Steve brings more than 30 years' music
education experience to his role as Musical Director. He taught
instrumental music in the Rockland Public Schools to students in
grades 5-12 for 33 years, retiring in June 2007. During his tenure,
he conducted concert bands, jazz ensembles, and marching bands,
and served as the system's Director of Music. He has been actively
involved in All State, Southeast District, and SEMSBA music festivals,
serving as a band manager, auditions board chairman, Secretary and
Treasurer, and has conducted the junior and senior festival bands
many times. For the past six years, Mr. Bell has also been serving
as Instrumental Music Director at Eastern Nazarene College, where
he conducts the Symphonic Winds and Jazz Ensemble.
The Band will also perform Elliot Del Borgo's "Slavonic Dances,"
Luigi Denza's famous "Funiculi Funicula," Emmanuel Chabrier's
"Espana Rhapsody," John Barnes Chance's "Variations
on a Korean Folk Song," and Henry Gass' "Casa Grande."
The concert will be held Sunday, March 9 at 1:00 p.m. in the Sharon
High School auditiorium, 81 Pond Street.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and are
available at the door.
