The Sharon Community Band was founded in 1988 by the late Roy Scott, under the auspices of the Sharon Recreation Department. The Band has grown from a handful of Sharon residents to about 55 musicians ranging in age from early teens to seventies. They come not only from Sharon and nearby towns but the South Shore, Rhode Island, Metro West, and the City of Boston. They include: developing students; adults who have picked up their instruments after many years; musicians with professional training and experience; and several music teachers.

They come together because this organization offers one of the best opportunities in the Boston / Providence area to make quality music in a collegial atmosphere.

The Band's "Goals and Objectives" are:

  • To make the best possible music for itself and its audience, being regarded as a quality music organization through performance, repertoire, and reputation.

  • To provide an opportunity for musicians to grow musically, and enjoy the experience and uniqueness of performing with a symphonic band of high quality.

  • To be challenged musically by the conductor, who will present a diverse repertoire at the appropriate level of difficulty.

  • To support our local communities through benefit concerts, scholarships, music programs, and student music development

The Community Band has two main ensembles: The Sharon Community Concert Band, which plays the symphonic band repertoire, and the Roy Scott Big Band, specializing in swing, jazz, and dance music. There is no formal audition required to play. Both rehearse weekly at Sharon High School or other venues in the town. Both Bands perform regularly, at bandstands throughout Southeastern Massachusetts, social events, and self-promoted concerts such as an annual Pops Concert and well-received programs for children. In repertoire, both bands strive to stretch their abilities with challenging pieces (up to Level 6) while also playing "crowd-pleasers" with flair and professionalism.

The Band owns a music library of nearly 100 concert band pieces and over 200 Big Band arrangements, percussion instruments (among them a set of four tympani), music stands and stand fronts, and a sound system with Bose speakers. The Band is financially self-sufficient, with concert fees and admissions the primary source of income, and supports music and the arts in the local area with a scholarship and other donations.

Our current membership is drawn from a number of area communities, including Avon, Barrington, Brockton, Canton, Chestnut Hill, Dedham, Dover, Easton, Foxboro, Framingham, Natick, Norwood, Plainville, Quincy, Scituate, Sharon, Stoughton, Walpole, Waltham, Westwood, Weymouth, and more.
